Mr John Knight
Consultant Colorectal & General Surgeon
Mr John Knight is a Consultant Colorectal and General Surgeon at University Hospital Southampton, where he also serves as Clinical Lead for Surgery. He trained at St Bartholomew’s Hospital, London, qualifying in 1996, and was appointed as a Consultant in 2008.
Mr Knight specialises in laparoscopic and robotic surgery for colorectal cancer, gastrointestinal neuroendocrine tumours, inflammatory bowel disease, diverticular disease, and benign proctology (including haemorrhoids, anal fissures, and fistulae). He also performs diagnostic colonoscopy and laparoscopic hernia repair.
He has led key developments in colorectal cancer care at UHS, including enhanced recovery pathways and the adoption of robotic surgery. He was previously Lead for the Southampton Colorectal Cancer MDT and Wessex Colorectal Cancer Lead (2017–2020). He is a core member of the Wessex Neuroendocrine Tumour MDT, a European Centre of Excellence.
Mr Knight is deeply involved in surgical education, having served as Surgical Tutor for the Royal College of Surgeons, Regional Training Director for Wessex Core Surgery, and Lead for Consultant Appraisal at UHS.
Outside work, he lives in the New Forest with his GP wife and their two children. He enjoys cycling, swimming, and skiing.
